Earlier in Taiwan, there was only simple oil lamps used as
a direction guide along the long coast line. In early Ching Tongzhi administration, the Inspector General of Imperial
Maritime Custom Service, Robert Hart, approved to build lighthouses and other facilities to improve marine navigation and to expand trading businesses.

In 1868, the customs office formed Department of Maritime Affairs to be responsible for lighthouse constructions and maintenances, and is the only country that manages lighthouses by customs.

This iron frame lighthouse was built in 1914, located on a sandbank at Kouhu Township, Yunlin County. The unstable sandbank affected the safety of ships in that area, therefore the tower was built. However, the foundation of the lighthouse has been rebuilt six times due to the shifting of the sandbank, which is the most rebuilt station in lighthouse history. |

Taichung Port Lighthouse was built in 1982, located on the top of a warehouse by Taichung port wharf, the only one built on top of a building and the highest lighthouse in Taiwan.
Due to the lack of a good location mark between Taoyuan and Penghu, the customhouse built Gaomei lighthouse in 1967 and built Taichung port lighthouse in 1982. However, the distance of these |

Fangyuan lighthouse was established in 1983, located at Wang-gon port, Fangyuan Township, Changhua County. It is an octagonal tower with black and white vertical bands. Not only is the latest built lighthouse, but also the only tower height is higher than the lens height due to the land subsidence. This place was used to be famous for the one of eight scenic views in Changhua – Wang-gon Fishermen's Lights. |

Height: 21.4 m Elevation of light: 56.4 m Nominal range: 27.2 sea miles
Eluanbi lighthouse was built in 1881, located at the southernmost point of Taiwan at Hengchun Township, Pingtung County. It is a painted white iron frame round tower facing southwest, and it was built with loopholes on the walls and with trench surrounding the tower, which makes it the only armed lighthouse in the world. In 1962, the lens was replaced with powerful rotating Fresnel lens and becomes the lighthouse with furthest light distance in Taiwan and was titled to "The Light of East Asia". Currently under Kenting National Park administration, and is one of eight great scenic views in Taiwan. It was opened to public in 1992. |

Kaohsiung lighthouse was established in 1883, also called "Cihou Lighthouse", located at the top of Cihou shan in Cijin district, Kaohsiung. The tower was the only white octagonal brick tower with a dome top in Taiwan, and is able to view Kaohsiung city.
This historic lighthouse has stood for more than 100 years, and it was not damaged under World War II. It became a national level three heritage building in 1987 and was opened to public in 1992.

Anping lighthouse was built in 1891, and currently located at north outbreak water of Anping port, Tainan. It was brick round tower first built on Anping castle, due to the change of river course, the station became further from the port, thus was deactivated in 1960. However, the customhouse rebuilt the lighthouse to a square iron tower and relocated to its current location in year 1965. |

Height: 11.6 m Elevation of light: 88.7 m Nominal range: 14.3 sea miles
Built in 1929, located at the top of Liuchiu Yu, off sea of Pingtung County, a painted white round concrete tower. It is the only lighthouse funded by fishermen’s association, and it was deactivated due to the damage in World War II. Fixed and managed by customhouse in 1952. Liuchiu Yu is the only coral reef island around Taiwan, and the enriched marine resources and coral reefs are one of the most important sightseeing locations in southern Taiwan.

Guosheng Port Lighthouse was built in 1957, located at Cigu Township, Tainan County, and a square cone shape iron structure painted with black and white bands. The original tower sank into the ocean due to typhoons and waves, and in 1969, the tower was completely damaged by Viola typhoon. In the following year, a new tower was built at the top of the nearby mountains. |
